When Blessed Mother Teresa, who was canonized as a Saint on the 4th of September 2016 was asked what motivated her to serve and care for the poorest of the poorest, her response astonished the world: “I see Jesus in every human being. I say to myself this is hungry Jesus, I must feed him. This is sick Jesus, This one has Leprosy or Gangrene; I must wash him. I serve because I love Jesus.” Wow, what an inspiration!!!
How many of us step back from evangelization because we are not a preacher or a singer or a teacher or a healer? We’ve reached a point where unless we prophesy, unless we counsel, unless we travel around the world, unless we operate in one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we give up on giving Christ to others.This is why in 1 Corinthians 12: 15-31 St Paul very wisely points out that we are all the members of the body of Christ. “Now if the foot should say ‘because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body’ it would not for that reason stop being part of the body” (vs 15). “ If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be”(vs17-18).
He continues to teach us “ Now you are the body of Christ and each one of you is a part of it”(vs 27). “Are all Apostles? Are all Prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of Healing? Do all speak in Tongues? Do all interpret? (vs 29- 30). NO! Just as every member of our body is given different roles; all vital roles, we, as the members of the body of Christ are also given different roles according to the purpose God created us for.Some are called to be cooks for the Kingdom of God, some are called to be cleaners for the Kingdom of God, some are gardeners in the Kingdom of God, some drivers, some authors, some writers, composers, care takers etc. The purpose of your creation is written in your heart.
You might not be the mouth that preaches, you might not be the hands that heals, but you might be the heart in the body of Christ which no one sees but plays the vital role in bringing people to love God. You might be the bones in the body of Christ that no one sees but plays the vital role in strengthening the people of God. You might be baker who feed the hungry or like Mother Teresa, who out of her love for Christ, became the care taker who made Jesus known to the ends of the Earth by the very desire God implanted in her heart – TO SERVE! She never desired to preach, she never desired to work miracles,she never desired to go from nation to nation however as Acts 1:8 said, when the power of the Holy Spirit came upon her (by acting upon the desire God put in her heart) she was made(by God) Christ’s witness in all Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the Earth.Through her care and love, she preached, she healed, she worked miracles and now God has given her a seat as a Saint!
Like Mother Teresa, we are called. Called to Love. Chosen to spread the love of Jesus.1 Corinthians 13: 1-2 “If I speak in the tongues of men and of Angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of Prophesy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing” .What is the desire God has put in your heart today? Are you a writer? Then pick up your pen now and write for Jesus. Are you a musician? Then pick up your instruments now and compose for Jesus. Are you an artist? Then pick up your brush and paint the story of Jesus. Are you a cook? Then serve a meal to the homeless. Are you a comedian? Then bring laughter and joy to the people of God.
Whoever you are, whatever you are created for, YOU play a vital role in the Kingdom of God. You are a unique creation of God. When He knit you together in the womb of your mother, He knew who you were to become: a preacher, a healer, a musician, a writer, a cook etc. Whatever it may be, he made sure that you life will bring Glory and Honor to the one God, our Savior Jesus Christ!!!
